What’s a requirements traceability matrix?

Types of traceability
Project managers use three types of traceability in matrices: forward, backward, and bidirectional. Tracing creates connections between requirements and artifacts, so the tracing direction implies which way the correlation forms — whether responding to a requirement or acknowledging it.
Here’s how each type works:
Forward traceability — in this model, the requirement determines a forward, or future, action, like a test. It outlines a project’s trajectory from beginning to end.
Backward traceability — in backward traceability, you map each test case back to a requirement. This makes sure you perform each test for a reason and don’t push past project scope with unnecessary actions.
Bidirectional traceability — the most comprehensive form of traceability, bidirectional combines forward and backward models. You’ll check that each test correlates to requirements, and vice versa.

What to include in a requirements traceability matrix
An RTM usually takes the form of a chart or table with a different row for every requirement and its testing process. The columns might vary by industry, but most RTMs have sections for:
Requirements
Requirement ID — identify requirements with an ID code so you can easily refer to them over the course of the project. You can use a numeric or alphanumeric code, like R012, to label each one.
Requirement description — describe the requirement, like “welcome email” or “add dropdown list to navbar.”
Justification — explain what the requirement does and how it might relate to others on the list.
Testing
Test case ID — give each test an ID code different from that of the requirement. You can include the requirement code in the Test Case ID column to visualize the correlation. Again, choose a number or alphanumeric code, like T72.
Test result or execution status — log whether the test passed, failed, or has yet to run. You can also write who executed the test and when.
Notes — include space to add a note about why a test passed or failed, which can inform your next process.

How to create an RTM in 4 steps
RTMs break your objectives into requirements and correlate them to actions, creating a living, breathing record of your project process. But with such an important role, your RTM has to be comprehensive. Don’t let its moving parts get lost.
Here are the steps you should take to design a matrix that works for your team:
Define project goals — establish the reason you need the RTM, such as to complete a software development project or accurately test a new prototype.
Review documentation — review previous project docs, like a technical requirement document (TRD), functional requirement document (FRD), or business requirement document (BRD). Use these to compile and track all relevant requirements.
Create the matrix — set up a Notion database with the columns your team needs in order to effectively trace requirements and tests. Link out to team docs and wikis so everyone knows what processes to follow and who to contact about issues.
Fill in (and modify) the RTM — enter each requirement and test case into the matrix, plugging relevant info into every column as you go along. As the project progresses, update the document with test results and related notes.
